Zhang-Composite Group was established in 2016 at Northwestern Polytechnical University, leaded by Prof. Chao Zhang under the supervisor of Prof. Yulong Li. Zhang-Composite group works mainly on failure analysis and impact problems of composite structures, with specific interests on the multiscale and multiphysics methods. The research areas lie in the areas of structure design of aircraft structures, anti-impact design of aero-engine structures and mechanical safety of energy devices. There are a total of 20+ Master and Ph.D students, and several postdocs and faculty members.

The group focuses on the following research topics:
(1) Characterization and high-fidelity modeling on the damage and failure behavior of textile composites;
(2) Constitutive and strength model of fiber reinforced composites;
(3) Multi-scale and multi-field modeling methods;
(4) Fracture test and modeling of composite interfaces;
(5) Impact dynamic behavior of composite materials and structures;
(6) Mechanics related behavior of energy devices;
(7) Bio-inspired structure design and additive manufacturing.

      Zhang-Composite Group collaborates actively with researchers all over the world, organize and participate frequently conferences and meetings with national and oversea colleagues. The research group welcome warmly visit, exchange and collaboration of researchers from external research institutions.
